How to support your pregnant woman!

I know! I know! You’re like : what happened to the woman I knew? Yeah! Pregnancy is an explosion of hormones, you know, and you’re the one dealing with the consequences! Don’t worry, it’s just a phase. In a few months, you won’t even remember going through it. Meanwhile, you can help your partner deal with this hormonal storm, it will greatly improve what you’re both going through.

Here are some ideas, but don’t forget that you’re the one who knows her and her needs best after all.

  • Go with her to the prenatal visits (at least the most important ones: the 1st one, the ultrasound one, the blood test ones)

  • Read books about pregnancy, childbirth and parenting. It’ll show her that you care and that you share her concerns.

  • Go with her to childbirth classes, breastfeeding classes and baby care classes.

  • Share her healthy food habits

  • Help her stay active by taking a walk together or swimming together

  • Help her rest. Try to participate in the household chores.

  • Practice relaxation exercises together.

  • Give her a back or foot massage by the end of the day, she’ll be grateful

  • Learn how to bathe, feed, diaper, hold, and comfort a baby. All of these activities will build a father’s confidence and enhance bonding with the child.

  • Have an open understanding mind while having discussions

  • Tell her how beautiful she is while pregnant.

  • Plan for the baby together, discuss the name, go shopping together for the crib, the car seat…

  • Send her some text messages during the day reminding her that you’re with her.

And don’t forget that you need to take good care of yourself to be able to help her so eat healthy food, exercise, find a new-fathers support group (live or online) or talk with some good old friends who became fathers not so long ago.

Good luck
